Sympathy for Slenderman by garnetbarren Sympathy for Slenderman by garnetbarren
SO I made a little mini-comic (in a very different style than I normally would, as you may have noticed) in response to all the hullabaloo surrounding Slenderman lately. If you didn't know, two twelve-year-old girls stabbed their friend in Wisconsin (my home state), claiming that they did it for Slenderman. Article here: www.jrn.com/tmj4/news/Waukesha…
This was all over national news, and now creepypasta and slender man are getting A TON of hate for it. Basically applying the "video games make people violent" argument to Slenderman. Which is a load of crap.
Sure, creepypastas are violent and about death and horror. But most people who read them are fully aware that they are fiction and that characters like Slenderman are not real. When you read these stories, you decide how you feel and react to them. Any crazy obsession with creepypasta is solely on the reader. These girls read the stories and decided to take it to an extreme, obsessive, and violent level. These girls made a conscious decision to attempt to kill someone. You can't blame a fictional character for that. If you can't separate fantasy from reality, creepypasta (and probably the internet in general) is not for you, friends. Keep your grip on reality, for the sake of the fandom. Don't be that one crazy fan that the public likes to generalize as the whole community. You're making us look REALLY bad.

*rant done*

Also I threw a few references to other creepypastas in there for the LOLz ;P

Did you hear about the kid stabbing her mother for slender man. The Young Turks said something about it. I think they said, that she was wearing a white mask and holding a knife in the kitchen waiting for her mother. Then you know...stabbed her in the back or the stomach or both.

Well, he wears a suit, and the stereotype is that people who wear suits have schedules. XD In some cases, this is true.

I would probably say "Stand for creativity, but keep your grip on reality." That's what these girls did was get carried away with a story, completely forgetting reality. As creative thinkers, I think it's important to keep our head on our shoulders and stay grounded so our creativity doesn't take over ours minds/lives.

The idea of blaming a Creepypasta icon for something like this is the epitome of ignorance and idiocy to me. It's just another shade of the "The Devil made them do it!" excuse, honestly. You can't blame a fictional character for something like this, just like you can't blame the bogeyman. Or movies. Or videogames. Or metal/rock and roll music. Because the problem isn't in the subject matter, it's in the people. The vast majority of the fans of this kind of stuff don't go around killing people, because they're able to separate fantasy from reality.

Those two girls were fucked up to begin with if they thought Slenderman was real enough that they felt they had to "appease" him by killing an innocent girl. And what kind of stupid, shitty parents let their kids go into the woods alone? Didn't they even notice the red flags that their kids were screwed up, or weren't they even paying attention? Apparently their classmates did, since they were like, "Oh, yeah, those kids were SUPER weird." and gave detailed descriptions of some of the weird crap they were into. Where were the parents during all of this? Did they just pass off the behavior as a phase?

When are the lazy, irresponsible parents gonna actually take some blame for this shit instead of redirecting the blame on other objects? No, it wasn't the stuff they were into, you just raised a crazy, horrible kid. Congratulations.

Personally, I'm really against anyone getting any sort of special or different treatment for their crimes because they have a mental illness.
People who commit crimes to this extent obviously don't think and function in a 'normal' way. It's becoming more and more common for people to be tried with a mental instability than to be tried without one.
In a society that demands equality we're sure going about it in a weird way.

Yeah, that opens up a whole new can of worms. What really is mental illness? Can it be faked? Can we psych ourselves into thinking we have a mental illness of disorder when we really don't?
I think that is a huge issue in todays world, especially among younger generations. We're so quick to be diagnosed with some sort of disorder or condition and get stuffed with pills for something as common as depression and anxiety or the like.
Being a little moody is natural. Doesn't mean you have a freakin' mood disorder, you know? It's not cool to be mentally ill, and I think kids today are tricked into thinking otherwise.

To me it's a cop-out for peoples actions and it really irks me.
Yes, I understand that mental illness is a serious disorder and a lot of people really are affected by it. However, in this type of situation it should be put on the backburner. Try the criminal, lock them up and as they're serving their time test them for a disorder and treat it appropriately during their time in prison.

That's just my opinion anyways.

omg... not only that there was another teenage girl which dressed up as slenderman and nearly killed her mother...
//OTL why are the younger generations basically just doing this.... not to mention, the two girls...why are they on the internet anyways... shouldn't the parents monitor them on what they are doing.... and the girls have common sense!
But nowadays people believe things on the internet to much
...
Poor slenderman . v .

The only people that need monitored are those who can not tell the difference between reality and fantasy. All it takes is one person to believe the fantasy stories they read and try to attempt that same thing to summon something that doesn't exits for almost everyone in the whole world to turn against that one thing. I truly think it's sad because everyone now thinks that these type of stories are bad, and the same goes for violent video games. But I would like to know at least 1 person over the age of 10 to tell me that they have never seen/read/experience something violent in there life.

There's no such thing as a person who hasn't experienced that sort of stuff at a young age. I watched Predator when I was a kid; yet I didn't grow up to become a murderous psychopath that hunts for human prey to emulate it. Because it's just a movie. Blaming the subject matter is just laziness and the parents don't want to take responsibility for the fact that they did a shitty job raising their children, not taking the time to actually pay attention to their kids that were clearly mentally unstable to the point that their classmates were able to pick up on it.

How do the classmates pick up on a creepy, unsettling vibe that the parents don't? That's a fucking problem.

But, hey, why take responsibility when you can do the easy thing and just blame their unhealthy obsession you were ignoring?

that is the exact point! but still you can't blame the story/movie/ video game/whatever. it's exactly what you said with the parents not noticing the issue.

Of course you can't. It's not real. People should be responsible for their own behavior and for the behavior of their kids. Blaming it on shit that isn't real is insane, because there are vast majorities of people that were influenced by the same subject matter that didn't end up being murdering lunatics.

I agree. I mean I've watched PewDiePie play Slenderman, but it doesn't actually show him killing your character. And as for the Slenderman story, I've listened to MrCreepyPasta read it, but I don't really remember the story (My memory sucks). But what scares me is that these girls could not tell the difference between fantasy and reality.
